Frequently Asked Questions

Q. How do WEIGHTED BLANKETS work?
A. Weighted blankets apply a weight and deep touch pressure that children and adults with sensory integration issues find to be soothing and calming. The weight in the blankets stimulates the touch receptors in the muscle joints and ligaments which benefits those with a poor proprioceptive sense (sense of body position). The weight provides a grounding effect giving the user an improved awareness of their body, which in turn helps relaxation and sleep.
Q. What are the blankets made from?
A. Our blankets are made of a strong cotton and polycotton material which is both durable and comfortable. Our blankets are unique in that the weights are enclosed in an inner lining for additional safety and comfort. The weight is provided by finest grade plastic pellets which comply to CE and BS5852 British Safety Standards.
Q. What weight should I buy?
A. There is no hard and fast rule although one of the generally accepted guidelines’ is approximately 10% of the users bodyweight. We make and stock a range of weights and can custom make blankets if you require something lighter or heavier. Please see our weight guide for further details.
Q. Are the blankets washable?
A. Yes – all of our blankets can be machine washed at a low/warm temperature (30-40 degrees C). Full washing details are sent with each blanket
Q. Are weighted blankets safe?
A. Absolutely! When used as directed and with common sense weighted blankets are a completely safe and effective tool to help with sensory integration. You should always bear in mind the generally accepted weight guidelines and we would not recommend exceeding this unless directed by your healthcare professional. The blanket should never be used to restrain a child and should not cover the face.
Q. How do I know if a weighted blanket will work?
A. The simple answer is that you won´t really know until you´ve tried. One way of testing is to try placing heavy coats or extra duvets on top of your child when they go to bed to see if they like the extra weight (although don´t try this in warm weather as they will simply get too hot). You could also try putting them to bed in a “mummy” style sleeping bag and tuck them into bed really tight. Some kids crave this extra weight and pressure and if your child likes it then chances are that a weighted blanket will work for you. We offer a money back scheme so you can return the blanket if it doesn´t work for you.
Q. How do WEIGHTED BELTS work?
A. Weighted Belts stimulate the proprioceptive system through nerve receptors that are positioned in the muscles, joints and ligaments around joints. These receptors sense tension and pass this information to the brain where it is processed. The brain responds by signaling the muscles to contract or relax creating improved awareness through a stronger neuro-muscular connection with the brain.
Q. How long will it take to see results?
A. Most children will experience immediate and dramatic results while others will experience a gradual increase in awareness over time.
Q. How do you recommend we introduce the Belt to our child?
A. The Miracle and Sensory Belts are a highly effective sensory aid. Be confident when you put the belt on! Some children need a sense of ownership before they become comfortable with wearing the belt. We recommend you leave the belt in your child´s room for a few days so they become familiar with the belt. Some parents call the belt a "Batman Belt" or "Magic Belt".

Note: If your child is not feeling well this might cause them to be resistant to wearing the belt.
Q. How long should my child wear the belt?
A. The Belt may be worn from 15 to 30 minutes to all day with breaks for meals, outside play, etc. Your child may prefer to wear the belt over their lap while eating. Watch your child´s behaviour, they will let you know when they´ve had enough. The amount of time your child wears the belt may vary from day to day. Some children may prefer to wear the belt under their clothing.
Q. How do WEIGHTED JACKETS work?
A. The deep pressure provided by weighted jackets has a "calming and organising" effect on the body´s proprioceptive system. They are commonly recommended by Occupational Therapists for use in the classroom to increase attention span and reduce hyperactivity often seen in children with autism, ADHD, sensory and learning difficulties. The weight provided by a jacket reduces self stimulatory behaviour such as chewing, hand flapping, twirling etc which in turn enables the wearer to concentrate on the task in hand.
Q. Where is the weight applied to?
A. Our weighted jackets provide weight primarily to the shoulder area which is comfortable and very effective. Additional weights can be added to the waist area as required. All weights are removable so the weight of the jacket can be optimized and tailored to the needs of the individual.  This also allows easy washing of the jacket.
Q. How long should the jacket be worn for?
A. The jacket should be worn for no longer than 20 to 30 minutes at a time and should not be worn during activities such as running, jumping or any type of strenuous play. We recommend that at a gap of at least 2 to 3 hours should be allowed between usage, however we strongly recommend that an occupational therapist or other suitably qualified professional is consulted when devising a usage plan for an individual.
Q. Are the weighted jackets washable?
A. Yes. Once the weights are removed the jackets can be machine washed. Weights can be wiped with a damp cloth if necessary.
Q. How long will DELIVERY take?
A. We endeavour to despatch all items within 24 to 48 hours of receiving your order, however weighted blankets may take longer if we do not have the weight and colour you require in stock. In that case it will take approximately 5 to 7 working days - we will keep you updated if we expect it to be longer than this.
